Héctor Rivadavia Gomez was responsible for first proposing the idea of a
South America n football confederation, the origins ofCONMEBOL . An old personal project of Gómez, it became a distinct possibility during a South American Championship held inBuenos Aires between July 2 and July 17, 1916, as part of the commemorations ofArgentina 's independence centenary [http://www.conmebol.com/conmebol_historia.jsp?slangab=S] . In July 9 (the exact day of the 100th anniversary of Argentina's declaration of independence), the football leaders of Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay met in Buenos Aires to study his idea, which was approved ad-referendum by each of the national associations.Personal History
Hector Rivadia Gómez, was a journalist and football Director of the Uruguay Association Football League. He was the honorary president of the CONMEBOL from 1920 to 1936.
