CatholicTV's first program was broadcast on the morning of
January 1 ,1955 when then-Archbishop Richard J. Cushing celebrated a PontificalLow Mass in the new Catholic television studios on Granby Street in Boston. By 1957 the Catholic Television Center, which had been an innovator in educational and religious programming, acquired the license to Channel 38. It would take much work over the next six years but on October 12, 1964, a dream became reality with the station going on the air as WIHS-TV. It was the first full-time Catholic television station in the world employing a general entertainment format along with the daily and Sunday Mass. The broadcast license was purchased in 1966 by Storer Broadcasting two years later (becomingWSBK-TV ) and the station continued to produce programming and the live broadcast of the Sunday Mass under the name "Boston Catholic Television (BCTV)" using the funds from the sale to build an Instructional Television Fixed Service (ITFS) system. In April of 1983 BCTV began its foray into the new system of supplying television over cable lines directly to the home. In 2006 the station rebranded as CatholicTV, a network serving numerous dioceses throughout the New England area and the United States.External links
