St Aldate's, Oxford

St Aldate's, Oxford

St Aldate's is a street in central Oxford, England. It runs south from the generally acknowledged centre of Oxford at Carfax. Here it continues as Cornmarket Street to the north, with Queen Street to the west (both pedestrianized for shoppers) and the High Street continuing east for motorised traffic.

St Aldates Church is on St Aldate's in Pembroke Square.

The Town Hall is on the east side of the street, including the Museum of Oxford. Christ Church with its imposing Tom Tower and Pembroke College (on Pembroke Square) are both off St Aldate's, to the east and west respectively.

Beyond Christ Church heading south is the Oxford University Faculty of Music, containing the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments. Opposite Christ Church is Alice's Shop, formerly frequented by Alice Liddell of Alice in Wonderland fame. Further south is an entrance to Christ Church Meadow to the east and a junction with Oxpens Road to the west.

The street leads south past Oxford's police station (as featured in the Inspector Morse television series), with the Crown and County Court opposite, towards Folly Bridge over the River Thames. Before the bridge, it becomes the Abingdon Road (A4144), leading directly south out of the city of Oxford towards the town of Abingdon.
