Powell High School

Powell High School is a high school located at 2136 W. Emory Road in Powell, Tennessee, just north of Knoxville. It is part of the Knox County public school system.

The first high school in Powell was established in 1874 and was called Perkins High School. In 1916, it was renamed for Columbus Powell, the prominent person for whom the Powell railroad depot had been named earlier. [Robert J. Booker, [http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/opinion_columnists/article/0,1406,KNS_364_4392751,00.html Sources good for schools' history] , "Knoxville News Sentinel", January 17, 2006.] The current school was established in 1948. Its most recent renovation was completed in 1985.

Powell High has an approximate enrollment of 1,400 students (2008-2009). The principal is Ken Dunlap. Assistant principals include: Chris Caruthers, Elizabeth Lackey, and Mark Majors.

The school has a total of 45 classrooms along with a football stadium, field and track, softball field, baseball field, football practice field, basketball gymnasium, and is home to the Powell High Sports Complex (Clark Duncan facility and J.D. Jett Gymnasium). Due to the recent rezoning in the Knox County School system the school is now over-capacity and has 11 teachers without classrooms. These teachers are called "travelling teachers".

The school's colors are Orange, Black, and White. The football team's home jersey consists of solid black with white numbers. The away uniform consists of solid white with black numbers.

Powell High School is well known in Knox County and across East Tennessee for its marching band program. During the 2007-08 school year, Powell High was crowned Grand Champion at a number of marching band competitions.Fact|date=August 2008
