town situated on the southern tip of theWolin island off the Baltic coast ofPoland . The island lies at the edge of thestrait ofDziwna inKamień Pomorski County in theWest Pomeranian Voivodeship .The town, now afishing port and gateway to the island's bathing resorts, has a population of approximately 4,900. Dating from the 9th century, it has been associated with the semi-legendary settlements ofJomsburg (Julin) andVineta . Several ruins from the Slavic period occupy the area.Historically, the town changed hands on several occasions. After Duke
Bolesław III Wrymouth of Poland conquered the Duchy of Pomerania under Wartislaw I in 1121, he called BishopOtto of Bamberg to christianize the area. In 1140Pope Innocent II made Wolin the first episcopal see in Pomerania. It remained a part of the Pomeranian duchy within theHoly Roman Empire , passing with the Duchy of Pomerania-Stettin to the Swedish Crown in 1648 following thePeace of Westphalia . In 1720 it was incorporated into theKingdom of Prussia and finally fell to the Soviet Union and was given to Poland in 1945 with the conclusion of theSecond World War .Twin towns
