* "Varanops brevirostris" Willinston, 1911"Varanops" was a
pelycosaur of the familyVaranopseidae . It lived in the LatePermian ofNorth America . It is one of the surviving pelycosaurs of Late Permian, because manypelycosaur s died out by the end of the EarlyPermian , and another pelycosaurian extinction by the end of MiddlePermian . But "Varanops" may have met its end because the gorgonopsids, and thetherocephalia ns were the dominantcarnivores during much of the LatePermian , and thediapsid s were evolving into new, advanced forms. "Varanops" became extinct by the early LatePermian as with many other varanopseids.Gallery
