Godere special woreda

Godere special woreda

Godere is one of eight woredas in the Gambela Region of Ethiopia. Gambela is the only worera of the "Administrative Zone 4" and is considered a Special woreda. Godere is bordered on the south and east by the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region, on the west by the Administrative Zone 2 of Gambela, and on the north by the Oromia Region. The only town in Godere is Meti.

The terrain in Godere is predominantly hilly, unlike the rest of the Region; elevations range 550-1260 meters above sea level. According to the "Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economy" published by the Central Statistical Agency (CSA), over 40% of the woreda is forest. The economy of Godere is predomantly agricultural. There are no agricultural cooperatives, no documented roads, and little other infrastructure. ["Atlas of the Ethiopian Rural Economy", pp. 30f]

Based on figures from the CSA in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 43,090, of whom 23,296 were males and 19,794 were females; 5,441 or 12.6% of its population are urban dwellers. With an estimated area of 1,939.32 square kilometers, Godere has an estimated population density of 22.22 people per square kilometer.
