Lane was born in
Corvallis, Oregon in 1855. He was the grandson of Oregon politicianJoseph Lane and a nephew of OregonU.S. Representative Lafayette Lane . He received his undergraduate degree fromWillamette University in 1876, and his medical degree from Willamette's medical school two years later.Medical career
Lane did his postgraduate work at the
College of Physicians and Surgeons inNew York City and began a medical practice inSan Francisco . He returned to Oregon and practiced medicine in Portland and was the superintendent of theOregon State Insane Asylum (now the Oregon State Hospital) from 1887 to 1891.Political career
He was elected mayor of Portland in 1905 and served one four-year term. At the end of the
Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition , he advocated for a "permanent rose carnival", leading him to be called the "Father of thePortland Rose Festival ", which continues today. In 1912, he was elected to theUnited States Senate , where he served on the Committee on Forest Reservations and Game Protection and the Committee on Fisheries.Lane died in San Francisco on
