Robert K. Wright, Jr. (born
1946 ) is an American military historian and author. after growing up in Connecticut, he graduated in 1968 with a degree in history fromHoly Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. He entered the Army, serving as a teletype operator, and then with the XVIII Corps Military History Detachment. During the second assignment he recorded the operations of the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam during 1969 and 1970.After his discharge in 1970, sergeant Wright attended graduate school on the GI Bill, ultimately earning his Ph.D. in history from the
College of William and Mary in1980 . For several years he worked with the Organizational History Branch of the U.S. Army Center of Military History. He was also commissioned as a major in theVirginia Army National Guard, specifically to command a military history detachment.In addition to his many scholarly works and articles related to the
Continental Army and theAmerican Revolutionary War , he continued his work of recording current military history. While commanding the 116th Military History Detachment of the VAARNG out of Manassas, VA, he worked as the civilian command historian for the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, VA. As part of this dual service, he was called to active duty on several occasions and worked on first hand accounts of corps operations duringOperation Just Cause inPanama in1989 , and of operations during theGulf War in 1990-1991 and Somalia in 1992. Wright returned to the Center of Military History in 1991 and eventually became the chief of the Historical Resources Branch. He retired in 2002 and now lives in New Smyrna Beach, FL.Wright's 1983 book, "The Continental Army" has become the standard reference that describes the army of the Revolutionary War: its history, structure, organization and units.
