History of the Library

The Stony Plain Public Library started as a project of the United Church Young People's Club. It first opened in January 1945 on 50th Street with 500 books on the shelves. The collection has now grown to over 167,000 volumes.

The library has moved over the years from the hotel dining room, to the Town Hall, to above the Fire Hall, to the Community Centre, to the former Recreation Office on 51st Avenue, and ultimately to its present location in Forest Green Plaza. The Stony Plain Women's Institute sponsored the library when it came under the Alberta Libraries Act in 1948.

Stony Plain Public Library is a member of the Yellowhead Regional Library and The Alberta Library.

The Governance

The Stony Plain Public Library is governed by a 10 member library board representing both the Town of Stony Plain and Parkland County, Alberta.

The sources of funding for the library include the Town of Stony Plain, Parkland County, Alberta Community Development, generous donations from within the community, and fundraising drives put on primarily by the Friends of the Stony Plain Public Library.

Programs

Stony Plain Public Library has programming for all ages ranging from babies (baby sign language), preschoolers (storytime), children (summer reading program/children’s book club), teens (teen advisory group), and adults (hostelling/gardening/investing).

Technology

The Stony Plain Public library has 11 computers for public use and 2 search computers which allow patrons to search almost any library holding in all of Alberta (patrons are then able to order material from across the province through interlibrary loan). The library connected to the Alberta SuperNet in 2006, which now allows the possibility of web conferencing and training/programming originating from any location in the world.
