USS Nerka

USS Nerka

USS "Nerka" is a fictitious submarine in Edward L. Beach's novel, "Run Silent, Run Deep". The book was made into a movie, in which the part of the "Nerka" was played by USS "Redfish" (SS-395).

Construction of USS "Nerka" (SS-380), named for the nerka, a lake and river salmon ("Oncorhinchus nerka") of the Pacific Northwest, also called blueback, sawqui, red salmon, and redfish, was authorized during World War II, but cancelled in July 1944.
