Fernando Sucre, played by Amaury Nolasco, is a fictional character from the American television series, "Prison Break". He was introduced to the series in the pilot episode as the prison cellmate of the series protagonist, Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller).

Of Puerto Rican descent, Sucre grew up in Chicago where he had several run-ins with the law. His mother Maria sent him to live with a relative in New York City to help him out. There, he found a steady job at a warehouse and his girlfriend, Maricruz Delgado.

Appearances

Fernando Sucre was first introduced as a main character in the series premiere. He has appeared in every episode so far except three, "John Doe", "Chicago" and "Orientación".

eason 1

He was the cellmate of Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller), though he was briefly separated from this role because he originally wanted nothing to do with Michael's escape attempt. Haywire (Silas Weir Mitchell) replaced him. After Michael engineered Haywire's removal as his cellmate, Sucre returns, this time anxious to have a role in the escape.

Since his incarceration, Sucre has had conjugal visits from Maricruz and becomes focused on getting out of prison as soon as possible. Sucre is worried about Maricruz's indecision about her future with him, as she is contemplating marrying Hector. In the flashback episode, "Brother's Keeper", it is revealed that the reason Fernando had held up a liquor store was to get enough money to pay for an engagement ring for Maricruz. His cousin Hector then tips him off to the cops, as he was also infatuated with Maricruz.

Sucre empathizes with Michael's situation and his anxiety for Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). Although Sucre slightly doubted his part in Michael's plan at first, he later places trust in Michael and subsequently stands up for him when T-Bag (Robert Knepper) expresses his anger for the first failed escape attempt.

Sucre aids Michael's plan in numerous situations through his connections with other prisoners. Occasionally, he comes up with ideas that help to save Michael's plan. When Michael was transferred to solitary confinement, Sucre was forced by the other breakout team members to use the hole behind his toilet to cover the hole in the guard's room in "J-Cat". Knowing that he would most likely be caught once outside his cell at night, Sucre forces T-Bag to retrieve another inmate's underwear in order for Sucre to give a reasonable answer to Bellick for being outside his cell at night.

After he was released from the Solitary Housing Unit (SHU) and Michael from psych ward, their hug shows their steadfast friendship. Eventually in the penultimate episode "Go", Sucre escapes from Fox River State Penitentiary, with seven other prisoners. He was one of the five escapees, along with Michael, Lincoln, John Abruzzi (Peter Stormare) and C-Note (Rockmond Dunbar), left running for their lives when their plane took off without them aboard and the police close behind them in the season finale.

eason 2

Sucre's plotline in the second season mainly involves finding Maricruz and persuading her to leave with him. In the season premiere, Sucre, Michael, Lincoln, Abruzzi and C-Note continue to evade the authorities as they head for Oswego as part of Michael's escape plan. Along the way, Sucre finds out about Charles Westmoreland's hidden $5 million. After changing into civilian clothes hidden in Michael's cemetery cache, Sucre and the other fugitives eventually split up in the second episode "Otis".

In the subsequent episodes "Scan" and "Map 1213", Sucre travels to the east and west sides of the country looking for Maricruz. After reaching Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, New York from Defiance, Ohio, Sucre is told by his cousin that Maricruz is getting married in Las Vegas in two days. He goes to Las Vegas in his cousin's classic motorcycle, a 1952 Ural, and finds the chapel that Hector and Maricruz will marry at. However, Sucre fails to meet with Maricruz and is again betrayed by Hector, who called the police. Sucre then decides to find the hidden money in Utah.

In the following two episodes, "Subdivision" and "Buried", Sucre reunites with Michael, Lincoln, C-Note, T-Bag and Tweener (Lane Garrison) to find Westmoreland's money. As they dig for the money, Michael tells Sucre of a message board at europeangoldfinch.net that can be used to keep in touch if they are separated again. When the money is found and packed, Sucre holds T-Bag, Michael and C-Note at gunpoint, forcing them to hand over the entire sum of the money. In "Dead Fall", it is revealed that it was a ruse planned by Sucre and Michael. However, they are in turn fooled by T-Bag, who managed to take all of the money. As they run from the police pursuing them, Sucre falls into a river and is pinned by a fallen tree. Michael refuses to abandon Sucre and eventually saves his life, which Sucre repays in kind, when he saves Michael from the coyote in "Bolshoi Booze".

Michael and Sucre part ways again as Sucre decides to resume his search for Maricruz, who left Hector at the altar. After failing to reach her via the phone in a later episode, "Rendezvous", Sucre is prompted to take Michael up on his offer. He arrives at the rendezvous point in "Bolshoi Booze" in time to save Michael. They then retrieve the location of the escape plane. The following episode "Disconnect" sees Sucre getting on the escape plane alone after Michael and Lincoln decide to stay and solve the conspiracy. However in "The Killing Box", Sucre and the pilot are forced to eject from the plane when they are targeted by a fighter jet. Sucre lands safely in the Sonoran Desert, Mexico. Pilot dies.

Sucre is next seen two episodes later in "The Message", on a bus heading for Ixtapa so he can find Maricruz. He befriends an old Mexican man, who quickly figures out that Sucre is desperately looking for Maricruz. After Sucre is kicked off the bus for not paying, the old man offers him to stay at his home for the night. Sucre agrees, making the old man a chicken dinner in return. After the meal, Sucre steals the old man's VW Beetle. He is caught by police, however, the old man (whose wife had died only a week before) says he only wanted to give Sucre gas money, and lets him go with the car.

After running out of gas in "Bad Blood" Sucre hitches a ride to the airport in Ixtapa. However, the driver was an airport security guard who had been advised that Sucre would be arriving in Ixtapa. He recognizes Sucre, but only when he sees the wanted poster. By this time, Sucre has found Maricruz and fled in a taxi. They arrive safely at Sucre's aunt's home in "Wash", but Sucre is soon captured by Brad Bellick. In an attempt to have Bellick free him, Sucre offers to lead him to T-Bag and the five million dollars, which Sucre has surmised is in the airport.

Bellick and Sucre then head to Panama to look for T-Bag. Bellick tells Sucre that he has left Maricruz in a hole to die, and if he wants her to live Sucre must lead him to the money. Near the end of the episode, Sucre finds out T-Bag is in Panama City. Michael joins their hunt in the next episode, wanting to turn T-Bag in. Unfortunately for Sucre, Bellick is shot in the leg by T-Bag and arrested. Michael and Sucre corner T-Bag with the intention of turning him in, however, T-Bag stabs Sucre in the chest with a screwdriver and flees. Michael calls for help before running after T-Bag.

Sucre leaves the hospital against doctor's advice, risking his life to save Maricruz. He chases after Bellick, who is being transported in a prison transport van, but collapses and blacks out. Sucre's fate is left open at the end of Season 2.

eason 3

By the beginning of the third season, Sucre remained the only member of the Fox River Eight to be still at large. The second episode of the third season Fire/Water shows Sucre to be alive and he is seen purchasing a gun at a local store. He proceeds to confront Bellick at SONA prison and threatens to shoot him if he doesn't tell him where Maricruz is. He reveals he never really had her and that he chased her off by threatening to arrest them for accessory. Sucre eventually finds out that Maricruz is in Chicago and calls her and tearfully tells her that he must stay in Panama until he gets his life back together. In Call Waiting, Sucre asks Lincoln to split the money of Westmoreland. But Lincoln rebukes Sucre, saying they lost the money and chases Sucre away. Sucre later reappears, this time unconscious with a bottle of alcohol in the front steps of Lincoln's hotel room. Linc takes Sucre in. At first, Sucre is eager to move down to Colombia as a migrant worker to financially support Maricruz and his unborn child, and refuses to act as an interpreter to aid Linc in setting up Michael's escape plan.

Upon hearing of the murder of Sara Tancredi, Sucre changes his mind and commits to preparing a route for the escape from SONA by taking over as gravedigger to secretly damage the electric fence protecting the prison. Lechero's cousin Augusto soon approaches Sucre, to smuggle a package to a SONA, just once. Sucre is swayed by the large amount of money offered. Afterwards Augusto asks him to make another delivery. After initially resisting Sucre ultimately agrees. Sucre soon commits himself fully to the escape plan in Photo Finish and Vamonos and almost helps Lincoln free his son L.J. Burrows. He and Lincoln later devise a plan to fool Company operative Gretchen Morgan that Sucre has turned against the brothers.

Later Sucre finds out the alias he chose to get a job at Sona has an arrest warrant, and is locked up in Sona shortly after Michael and Co. escape when T-Bag recognises him and reveals his true identity. As a result, Sucre became the sixth and final member of the Fox River Eight to be taken down by the authorities, and the third member not to die upon interception.

In the third season it has a conversation between Fernando Sucre and Gretchen Morgan talking about the meaning of Fernando's family name: Sucre in catalan language means sugar. That's why she started to call him with the nickname "azucar" (sugar in Spanish).

At the end of Season 3 Sucre was put into Sona for refusing to tell the guards where Michael Scofield was after his escape. T-Bag convinced them that Sucre was involved, and after being tortured for several hours and refusing to submit he was thrown in the prison Sona, just in time to see T-Bag take over as the new ruler of the Panamanian prison after the death of its former ruler, Lechero.

eason 4

In the three weeks between Season 3 and Season 4, Sona has burned down and Bellick, T-Bag, and Sucre have escaped.

Sucre and Bellick get across the US border, where Bellick's mother picked them up. As Sucre went to visit his newborn daughter, the authorities were alerted by Maricruz's sister Theresa, and he and Bellick were both arrested at the hospital.

They were removed from the prison system and put on Don Self's covert "A-Team" with Lincoln, Michael, Sara, and Mahone to infiltrate the Company in Los Angeles. They are then joined by hacker/identity thief Roland Glenn who is assigned to the team by Self.

Characteristics

In the flashback episode of the first season, "Brother's Keeper", Fernando's first illegal act involved armed robbery with a revolver pointed right at the shopkeeper - only to take 100 dollars. He later repeated the act to earn the money for the engagement ring he intended to give to Maricruz, only to be turned in by his own cousin, Hector. During his time at Fox River Penitentiary he appeared to be in good terms with almost all correctional officers and other inmates prior to the prison break. He's easily one of the members of the Fox River Eight whose loyalty towards Michael is unquestionable, (as seen in "The Art of the Deal" when at gunpoint, countless times, he does not give up any info regarding the whereabouts of Michael) the other one being Lincoln Burrows. Fernando also has a knack for making unconventional and seemingly-mundane yet effective strategies from time to time, as seen when he managed to successfully cover up the hole that Scofield's PI crew dug up. His ability to come up with bizarre improvisations makes him just about as intellectually formidable as Michael is. Outside, he displayed being able to hot wire various vehicles in record time, which was a valuable asset for Michael and all the other cons that Scofield took with him on the night of the escape.
