- Za dom spremni
The
salute "Za dom - spremni!", literally translated: For home - ready!, is a nationalistCroatia n salute.
It dates back to at least the 19th century BanJosip Jelačić . Its modern-day meaning, however, was defined with its usage during theSecond World War by theUstaše movement, as their equivalent of the Nazi "Sieg Heil " salute.Fact|date=June 2008A reasonable translation would be: "for our homeland we are ready at any time for action". The Ustaše salute also included the phrase "Za koga? Za Poglavnika!" meaning "For whom? For the
Poglavnik " (Ante Pavelić ).Fact|date=May 2008The opera Nikola Šubić-Zrinski (
1876 ) contained a patriotic songU boj, u boj that included that salute. The popular Croatian band "Thompson" has used the slogan in one of their songs; some fans respond with the
Nazi salute , though their lead singerMarko Perković has denied ever "raising his hand" in the salute himself [ [http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/02/world/europe/02croatia.html Fascist Overtones From Blithely Oblivious Rock Fans]New York Times July 2 ,2007 ] .ee also
