United States highway . Never a long highway, it went from bi-state route (Arkansas andOklahoma ) to a tri-state route (Arkansas, Oklahoma andTexas ). The highway's northern terminus is inFort Smith, Arkansas at an intersection with BusinessU.S. Route 71 and Highway 255. It entersArkansas fromOklahoma as a controlled-access highway, but the highway continues as Interstate 540 when US 271 exits toward downtown after a half mile (800 m). Its southern terminus is inTyler, Texas at an intersection with State Highway 31 and State Highway 155 in Texas, five blocks east ofU.S. Route 69 (though signage is indeterminate).Route description

The route runs for 3 miles in
Arkansas , all within Fort Smith. Its northern treminus is at Business U.S. 71 and Highway 255 in Fort Smith. Its southern terminus is at theOklahoma State Line near Pocola.History
In
1926 , US 271 was commissioned betweenFort Smith, Arkansas andMena, Arkansas by way of Spiro andPoteau, Oklahoma but the route south of Poteau was turned over toU.S. Route 270 (and later,U.S. Route 59 ) in1930 . US 271 was then re-routed through Talihina andHugo, Oklahoma as well as Paris andTyler, Texas towards Beaumont near theGulf of Mexico . The Tyler to Beaumont leg was taken over byU.S. Route 69 in1934 .US 271's original northern terminus was at an intersection with
U.S. Route 64 andU.S. Route 71 in Fort Smith. It has since been realigned twice: once beginning at U.S. 71 and Y Street then crossing into Oklahoma at Arkoma, the second time to its current terminus in southern Fort Smith.Bannered routes
