25 October 1956 ) was a Spanish-bornwriter andpoet ; she was also a noted translator of the works ofRabindranath Tagore . She was born in Malgrat de Mar,Barcelona ,Spain to a Puerto Rican mother and a Catalonian father. She later lived in theUnited States , studied inColumbia University , and spent the duration of theSpanish Civil War (July 18, 1936–April 1st, 1939) writing her "Diario" ("Diary") inCuba . She eventually become a professor at the University of Maryland before her death of ovarian cancer in San Juan,Puerto Rico , two days after her husbandJuan Ramón Jiménez received theNobel Prize in Literature .See also
