A 0-4-0+0-4-0, in the
Whyte notation for the classification ofsteam locomotive s bywheel arrangement , is aGarratt articulated locomotive . It features no leading ortrailing wheel s at either end, having only two sets of fourdriving wheel s. A similar arrangement exists for Mallet and Meyer locomotives, but is referred to as0-4-4-0 .Other equivalent classifications are:
UIC classification : B+B (also known asGerman classification andItalian classification )French classification : 020+020Turkish classification : 22+22Swiss classification : 2/2+2/2The first Garratt locomotive, K1, one of two RailGauge|2ft gauge
TGR K Class locomotives built in 1909, has this wheel arrangement and has been restored to operating condition at theWelsh Highland Railway . This arrangement proved one of the less popular Garratt types, since most Garratt locomotives were larger and more powerful, requiring more pairs ofdriving wheel s to operate within the normalaxle load limits, and becauseleading wheel s gave more stability and better tracking to allow faster speeds.
