- Spa, County Down
Spa is a small
village inCounty Down ,Northern Ireland , close to Ballynahinch. It is situated in theDown District Council area. The village takes its name from the sulphur and iron spa well on its south west edge. For many years the village waters had been used to ease skin complaints and rheumatism. To this end, the village opened a spa house called The Regency, complete with baths and treatment rooms. Although previously a health resort, the closure of the wells during the 20th century saw this facet of tourism in Spa close. There is a lake just outside the village.
Recently the village has grown significantly with the addition of many housing estates including Carnglave Manor and Marcevin Grove.
The Spa Golf Club is situated between Spa and Ballynahinch on the Grove Road. The Golf Club has held qualifying matches for the British Senior Open Championship in recent years.
Spa also features a small primary school which, in recent years, has augmented in size to accommodate the increasing quantity of students which has resulted from the development of new housing estates.
