Regions of Moroccondash As part of a 1997 decentralization/regionalization law passed by the legislature 16 new regions (provided below) were created. It is the current highest administrative division of
Morocco . Each region is subdivided into 61 second-order administrative divisions, which are prefectures and provinces. A Moroccan region is governed by aWali , nominated by the King. The Wali is also governor of the province (or prefecture) where he resides.Western Sahara
Three regions — Guelmim-Es Semara (6), Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakia El Hamra (7), and Oued Ed-Dahab-Lagouira (11) — coincide with occupied territory in
Western Sahara , whose sovereignty is disputed between Morocco and thePolisario Front which claims the territory as the independentSahrawi Arab Democratic Republic , but presently controls regions east of theMoroccan Wall .See also
