US-96 begins at SH-87 in Port Arthur,Texas. At its starting place it is already merged with US-287 and US-69. The three highways head NW toward Beaumont. In Beaumont the three highways briefly merge with I-10, but soon split from the Interstate heading NW instead of following I-10 heading East. In Lumberton, US-96 breaks off from US-287 and US-69 and heads NE instead of following the other highways and heading NW. US-96 ends in Tenaha,TX where US-59 splits from US-84. At this point, turning left would put you on US-59,US-84. Going straight would put you on US-59 and turning right would put you on US-84.
History
In 1939, US 96 was designated along its current route.
