Versant

Versant is an automated test of spoken English. It evaluates the ability to understand, be understood and general English language proficiency. It has been used commercially for finding people with high English proficiency such as at the Korea / Japan football world cup in 2002.

Administration

The administrator provides the candidate with written instructions and a personal access number. The candidates access the test by phone. The administrator retrieves scores online.

Technology

The Versant uses Ordinate speech recognition technology. The technology uses a speech recognition system that is specifically designed to analyze speech components from native and non-native speakers of English. In addition to recognising words, the system also locates and evaluates relevant segments, syllables, and phrases in speech. The system then uses statistical modelling techniques to assess the spoken performance.
