Adlam

Adlam

Adlam is an old English noble surname derived from the Anglo Saxon Adel helm or Eagle Shield, also translated as Noble Protector.

They are a distinguished military family originally from Wiltshire whose exploits mirror the course of English history:
* Captain W. Adlam's involvement with the Roundheads during the English Civil War is described in the House of Commons' history;
* Captain S. Adlam fought in the French wars in Canada;
* Major General William Adlam fought in the American War of Independence, and the Napoleonic Wars and
* Lieutenant Colonel Tom Edwin Adlam was awarded the VC in World War I.

Recently, Adlams have gained renown in business and the arts, with performers such as the harpsichord player and maker, Derek Adlam, the international violinist Adrian Adlam, the composer Basil Adlam, the comedian Terry Adlam, and academics such as Dr Carol Adlam, and businessmen such as financier Boris Adlam.
