Chan Kau-tai

Chan Kau-tai ( _zh. 陳裘大) is a former chief engineer of the Housing Department of Hong Kong. He is also the father of the Hong Kong artist (singer) Eason Chan.

During 2000 and 2001, Chan was investigated by the Independent Commission Against Corruption of Hong Kong, and was later arrested. The Commission bugged his office and he was seen there counting piles of cash he received as bribes. He was found guilty in 2003 of accepting advantages as a public servant, by accepting more than three million Hong Kong dollars in payments from some material suppliers and construction contractors. During the trial, he was described by the judge as an "extremely corrupted civil servant", a term he was quickly known as by the people of Hong Kong.

However, in 2004 he went for an appeal, claiming that the Commission has deliberately concealed a record of driving under the influence of alcohol of a high investigator, causing biases in the trial. The Court of Appeal ruled in 2005 that his case should be sent back and heard again by a lower court.
