civil parish on the outskirts ofYork ,England . Situated to the south of the city, on the east bank of the River Ouse, it was the site of the 11th centuryBattle of Fulford . Present-day Fulford is a leafy suburb which is home to many who work at the nearbyUniversity of York . Between Fulford and the University is Walmgate Stray.According to the 2001 census the parish had a population of 2,595. It used to be part of the Selby district but in 1996 it was transferred to become part of the newly created City of York
Unitary Authority . However, it remains within the Selby parliamentary constituency. The modern village incorporates the old settlements of Water Fulford to the South and Gate Fulford on the road to York. The currentcivil parish is co-terminous with theUnitary Authority Ward boundary. The Parish is much reduced in size, having once extended North up the A19 past Fulford Barracks as far as Heslington Road and including York Cemetery. It is also home to
Imphal Barracks , headquarters of theBritish Army 's 15th Infantry Brigade. Many soldiers and their families live in married quarters outside this. The original cavalry barracks date back to 1795. Fulford is also an important headquarters for theRoyal Military Police .Fulford Cross still stands opposite the barracks, beyond the present boundary. The cross has been removed, but an octagonal shaft on a three-stepped pedestal remains. Thought to be of the late-15th century.
Schools in the area include Saint Oswald's Primary School and
Fulford School , a Mathematics and Computing College. The
Parish council maintains a website with local information which includes a directory of organisations and shops, a list of useful links & contact details for services etc, a guide to local issues such as current planning debate and a record of parish council minutes.Low-lying land near the River Ouse is prone to flooding.
Traffic through Fulford can be problematic, as the A19 forms the main street and the intersection with the A64 on the edge of the village is notably prone to congestion at peak times. At the point where the A19 and the A64 join stands the
York Designer Outlet , featuring many shops.A new pedestrian bridge was constructed as a
Millennium project, linking Fulford to the South Bank area on the other side of the river.A 10km long
scale model of theSolar System starts across the Ouse, West of Fulford and runs viaNaburn toRiccall along the disusedrailway line from York to Selby which is now a Sustranscycle path and part of theWhite Rose cycle route : [http://www.solar.york.ac.uk/ Solar System Cycle Path] .Fulford Golf Club, which celebrated its centenary in 2006, was home to the
Benson and Hedges International Open between 1971 and 1889. During the 1981 tournament,Bernard Langer clambered 20 feet up the ash tree by the 17th green to play his third shot.It is the birthplace of former England football manager
Steve McClaren .External links
