Wilson is a common surname of English and Scottish origin. It literally means "son of Wil" (William, an Old German name). It is the eighth most common surname in both England and the United States [United States Census Bureau (9 May 1995). . Retrieved on 2008-07-04.] and the third most common surname in Scotland. It is also now quite common as a surname in many other English speaking countries such as Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

It also had some popularity as a first name in England beginning in the 1000s and 1100s, after William the Conqueror took the throne. As a first name Wilsons are found primarily in the United Kingdom, and the United States.
