United Nations Detention Facility

United Nations Detention Facility

The United Nations Detention Facility (UNDF) is the only UN-administered jail in the world. Established in the wake of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, the UNDF is a 89 cell institution located within a high security prison compound five miles outside the city of Arusha in Northern Tanzania.

It is exclusively mandated to hold individuals indicted for, or suspected of, having committed war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). As such it is also sometimes referred to as the ICTR Detention Unit.

At present, 51 people transferred in from more than 15 countries are confined there. They include the former Rwandan Army Chief of Staff Augustin Bizimungu, the pop singer Simon Bikindi, along with former Minister of Defense and suspected mastermind Théoneste Bagosora. The welfare of these inmates is monitored by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
