High Resolution Microwave Survey

High Resolution Microwave Survey

The High Resolution Microwave Survey was a NASA project that was to scan ten million frequencies using radio telescopes. A decade in the making, the objective was to find transmissions from alien intelligences. The primary point of observation for the project was the Arecibo Ionaspheric Observatory in Puerto Rico. The project began in October 1992 with SETI researcher Jill Tarter on board. However, a year later, first-term Nevada Senator Richard Bryan succeeded in shutting down the project.[1]

This time it was Senator Richard Bryan of Nevada who led the charge against governmental expenditures on SETI. "The Great Martian Chase," he said, "may finally come to an end. As of today millions have been spent and we have yet to bag a single little green fellow. Not a single Martian has said take me to your leader, and not a single flying saucer has applied for FAA approval.""
