Eric Smith (born March 17, 1983) is an American football safety for the New York Jets. He was the last player drafted in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He played college football at Michigan State University. In his debut game against the Cleveland Browns, he caught an interception for one yard.

College career

Four-year starter awarded All-Conference honors as a senior, leading the team with 101 tackles. Posted career-best numbers of 115 tackles and nine pass defenses as a junior.

Pro career

Finished his first pro season with 27 tackles, 2 INT's and 2 PD's as a reserve. Smith finished his second full season as a key reserve as well as making his first start, with 40 tackles and 5 pass deflections. On September 28, 2008, Smith was fined $50,000 and suspended one game because of a helmet-to-helmet collision with Anquan Boldin of the Arizona Cardinals, which caused Boldin to be hospitalized.
