It has 14,385 inhabitants (2005).The first written mention about the town is from 1278 ("Nova Berlyn"). In the first half of the 15th century, the town, situated in the
Neumark region, was under control of theTeutonic Knights . Before and after, the Neumark was part of Brandenburg, which from 1701 on belonged toPrussia . After the Second World War, the town and the eastern part of Brandenburg fell to Poland. It is the birthplace ofEmanuel Lasker (1868-1941), the secondWorld Chess Champion .External links
