Sally Walker

Sally Walker is an author and academic administrator known for work in media law. Currently the Vice-Chancellor and President of Deakin University (since 2003), Walker studied at Warrnambool High School and then received a scholarship to attend Melbourne Girls' Grammar School. She obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree with First Class Honours from the University of Melbourne; she placed first in her graduating class and was awarded the Supreme Court Prize, the Anna Brennan Memorial Prize and the inaugural Joan Rosanove Memorial Prize. She later obtained a Master of Laws degree from the same institution.

From 1978 to March 1979, she was Associate to the High Court of Australia's Justice Aickin. The following year, she became an Associate Partner with Gillotts, Solicitors. Between April 1993 and April 1995, Walker was First Academic Secretary of the Victorian Attorney-General's Law Reform Advisory Council. She has held several positions with the University of Melbourne, including Hearn Professor of Law, President of the Academic Board, Pro-Vice Chancellor, and, until 2003, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

She has written extensively in the field of media law, being the author of "The Law of Journalism in Australia"and "Media Law: Commentary and Materials." Furthermore, she is editor and principal author of "The Communications Title for The Laws of Australia" and joint author of "The Law of Securities" (5th edition) with Professor E. I. Sykes.

Walker has sat on many boards and committees, including the Victorian Press Ownership Inquiry, Law Council of Australia committees, and the Board of the Communications and Media Law Association. As a lawyer, she was involved in the Working Party inquiry into the concentration of print media ownership in Victoria.
