Norwich University inNorthfield, Vermont in 1894 where he was a member ofTheta Chi Fraternity, and from theUniversity of Michigan School of Law. He was elected to theVermont House of Representatives in 1906 and to the Vermont State Senate. He served in theVermont National Guard from 1899 to 1908, then returned to service from 1915 to 1923.In 1923, Gibson was elected to the United States House of Representatives as a Republican. In November, 1933, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate, where he served until his death.
Gibson's son, Ernest William Gibson, Jr., was also a U.S. Senator from Vermont.
