" is a small village in the district of Thirunelvelli in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. The eminent poet and freedom fighter Mahakavi Bharathiar once lived in Kadayam. Mahakavi Bharathiar's wife comes from Kadayam and Bharathiar used to sing many partriotic songs by standing on the roof top of his wife's parents house situated in "Pazhaya Gramam" meaning "old village" which is another major street in the village of Kadayam. The name "Kadayam" actually is variant of the term "Kedayam". "Kedayam" is a form of a war shield and it is believed that many hundreds of years of ago, the Goddess "Nithya Kalyani" a re-incarnation of Goddess Parvathi showed her 'rudhra swaroopa' (feeling of anger) at the villagers for not performing their religious and dharmic duties and dwelling too much on materialism. The Gorddess's anger manifested in the form of successive deaths of the priests who were to perform the Daily Puja for the Lordess. After seven deaths of seven priests on seven successive days, the villagers begged the Goddess for forgiveness. Her anger somewhat subsided, the lordess was supposed to have thrown her "kedayam" which fell approximately 4 miles from the "Nithya Kalyani" temple. The villages migrated to this spot where the "Kedayam" fell and began living there. Eventually, the new location came to be known as the village of Kadayam. This mythological story was told by one of the seniors of the village, Sri Ranganatha Vadhyar, affectionately known to the village boys as "Ranga Mama". Ranga mama now lives with his son in Bangalore, India. (Sridar, son of V. Sivarama Iyer posted this entry.. Sridar now lives in Detroit, Michigan.

The Thala Malayan Temple

Close to Kadayam village is the Sastha (Thala Malayan) temple. It is present amidst the forest mountains. The Ramanadhi (one of the tributaries of Thamarabarani river) flows past this temple. The temple has two statues - of an elephant and a leopard. According to the information provided by the villagers, when a gurukkal was performing pooja to the God, the leopard was chasing the elephant which resorted to the gurukkal for help. The gurukkal who was disturbed from his trance was enraged and raised his hand in admonition. The elephant was converted to a statue. And so was the leopard that was in close proximity to the elephant.Kadayam is one of the best place to produce lemons and new village there famous family mani incharge in karpagam vinagar temple in ramanadhi river area
