John Hutton (born 1906 in
New Zealand and died 1978 inEngland ) is most famous for his glass engravings on the Great West Screen ofCoventry Cathedral ,UK , known as the "Screen of Saints and Angels", 66 larger-than-life figures that took ten years of creation (e.g. theangel ofannunciation , the angel of theresurrection , the angel of themeasuring rod ), for which he received instant acclaim in 1962.He designed glass engravings at the
Shakespeare Centre atStratford-upon-Avon , UK, (Ophelia ,Macbeth ,Romeo and Juliet etc.).At
Ottawa ,Canada , he created glass engravings of the National Library and Archives, a total of 37 panels over three floors with main theme worldliterature : larger than life figures ofCervantes ,Shakespeare ,Molière ,Tolstoy etc., alsoApollo and theNine Muses .At the Civic Centre of
Newcastle upon Tyne , UK, he created a glass screen representing some of the great inventions of the city and also figures from localmythology with his son, Warwick Hutton.He also created a glass screen of four
mermaid s atPlymouth , UK, Civic Centre, and designed three glass panel designs for the entrance hall balcony at Mercury House,London , UK.At downtown
Dallas ,Texas ,USA , he designed a window with a glass etching of adove graces at the main entrance to theChapel ofThanksgiving titled 'The Spirit of Thanksgiving'. He had said, "Thedove is asymbol used throughout history to depictbeauty , peace,hope andthanksgiving ."Some of his pieces of art are also exhibited at the
Corning Museum of Glass ,New Jersey , USA.1975 he became first Vice President of the new found British
Guild of Glass Engravers (Laurence Whistler was first President and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was its firstPatron ).He was first married to the artist Helen Hutton and then to Marigold and had three sons, by his first wife: Warwick Hutton, who was an artist himself, Macaillan Hutton who is an architect, Peter Hutton who is a teacher and one daughter by his second wife Katie Hutton.
