The novel revolves around one woman named Susan Thorton, who wakes up in a town named Willawauk with no recolection of how she got there. It turns out she had been in a car accident and suffers mild amnesia. Her personal surgeon, Dr.McGee, helps her recall some of her past with the help of the friendly nurse Mrs. Baker. It seems Susan will make a speedy recovery, and everything is looking well and healthy. But she can't seem to remember anything at all about her job. Phone calls form her colleages do nothing to jog Susan's memory. She has an eerie feeling that something weird happened there, that something about her old job was wrong... Suddenly, Susan begins having dreams about a tragic accident that had happened to her over 13 years ago, which left her boyfriend, and soon to be husband, dead. The four men that murdered him and nearly murdered her show up at the Willawauk hospital, and seem to follow her around. They are exact look-a-likes. But they cannot possibly be the men, they look as though they haven't aged a day, and two of the four had died years ago. Susan's visions become more vivid and horrific, and as she struggles to recover from the accident, deal with her horrifying visions, and continue the budding romance between her and Dr. McGee, she has until the upcoming Friday to find out if all the flashbacks are real or imaginary...
