James Arnold Frere, FSA (born
20 April 1920 ) was an officer of arms at theCollege of Arms inLondon . He was the only son of John Geoffrey Frere of Hartley and Violet Ivy Sparks. Following military service in theIntelligence Corps , [LondonGazette|issue=37678|supp=yes|startpage=4016|date=6 August 1946 |accessdate=2007-12-12] he began his heraldic career on24 February 1948 when he was appointed Bluemantle Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary. [LondonGazette|issue=40695|startpage=566|date=27 January 1956 |accessdate=2007-12-12] He held this post until his appointment as Chester Herald of Arms in Ordinary on23 January 1956 to replaceJohn Heaton-Armstrong . [LondonGazette|issue=38221|startpage=1492|date=27 February 1948 |accessdate=2007-12-12] Frere would hold this post until his retirement in 1960.
