Lefkada prefecture. Until the mid-1970s, the island was administered under theKefalonia prefecture with the Ithaca. Its nearest island is Kalamos, with a deep channel between them; the mainland is approximately 5 km to the northeast in theAitoloakarnania prefecture. Kastos has a school, a church and a square ("plateia "), its nearest lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) is in theAitoloakarnania prefecture (in continentalGreece ) but most of its students also attend inNydri (on the island ofLefkada ).Kastos village
The island has only one village, the homonimous Kastos, located on its east coast. It has a population of about 120, involved mainly in fishing and tourism services. During the summer Kastians of the diaspora return for holidays and, together with the fluctuating visitors arriving on
yacht s, form its seasonal character. The island is 7 km long from north to south, and 800 m wide. The area is 5.901 km² and its highest point is 142 m over theMediterranean Sea level.Population
