Kalamazoo, Michigan , he attended the common schools and graduated fromAntioch College inYellow Springs, Ohio , in 1862. He pursued graduate work at theUniversity of Michigan atAnn Arbor and graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan in 1864. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Kalamazoo.In 1879, he moved to
Salt Lake City ,Utah Territory and upon the admission of Utah as a State into the Union was elected as a Republican to the U.S. Senate and served fromJanuary 22 1896 untilMarch 3 1897 . He was not a candidate for renomination and resumed the practice of law inSalt Lake City .On
December 8 1906 , Brown was shot inWashington, D.C. by his longtime mistress, Anne Maddison Bradley, who claimed to be the mother of his children. Bradley found letters to Brown from Annie Adams Kiskadden (mother of actressMaude Adams ), and assumed he was having a second affair. Brown died from his wounds four days later, aged 63, and was interred inMount Olivet Cemetery , Salt Lake City.External links
