Joseon Dynasty . He was born into ayangban family of theGyeongju Kim lineage, the son ofKim No-gyeong . He passed the "jinsa" literary examination in 1810, and entered government service. However, he never rose above the rank ofhyeon magistrate. Accompanying his father on a mission to theQing Dynasty court in 1822, he struck up correspondences with leading Chinese calligraphers of the time, includingLiu Xihai (劉喜海). [Lee (1983), p. 234.]Kim's elder brother Kim Jeong-hui was also known for his calligraphy. [Lee (1993), p. 124.]
