Charles Sargeant Jagger was born in the village in 1885. He was the son of a colliery manager. Jagger was famous for a number of war memorials commemorating theFirst World War , such as theRoyal Artillery Memorial (1925) which stands atHyde Park Corner inLondon .Railways
Until the 1960s the village had two railway stations; both have since closed.
Residents now rely on Stagecoach buses to go to
