Tim Carpenter is a Democratic member of the Wisconsin Senate, representing the 3rd District since his election in 2002. He is currently President "Pro Tempore" of the Wisconsin State Senate.

Carpenter was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1984 and served nine terms until 2002, holding the post of Speaker "Pro Tempore" in 1993. Carpenter was first elected to the Wisconsin Senate in 2002. He was re-elected to a second term in 2006.

Carpenter currently chairs the Senate Committee on Public Health, Senior Issues, Long Term Care, and Privacy. He is also a member of the following Senate Committees: Health & Human Services; Veterans & Military Affairs, Biotechnology & Financial Affairs; Small Business, Emergency Preparedness, Workforce Development, Technical Colleges & Consumer Protection.

Carpenter was born in Milwaukee and graduated from Pulaski High School. He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a master's degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison after studying at its La Follette Institute. In 2004, Carpenter unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic primary for the United States House of Representatives in the 4th congressional district, losing the Democratic primary to fellow state senator Gwen Moore.

Carpenter is a supporter of LGBT issues and is one of two openly gay members of the Wisconsin Legislature, alongside Rep. Mark Pocan (D–Madison).
