Company History

Kuehne + Nagel has evolved from a traditional international freight forwarder to a leading global provider of integrated supply chain solutions for a comprehensive range of industries.

August Kühne and Friedrich Nagel founded the forwarding and commissioning business in 1890 in Bremen, Germany, concentrating on cotton and consolidated freight, and until the mid-twentieth century operated nearly exclusively in the seaports of Germany. In the early 50s, Alfred Kühne initiated the company's international expansion, and first offices were opened in Canada, followed by the Benelux region, and soon thereafter the Middle East. As of the mid-1960s, Klaus-Michael Kühne - following in his grandfather's and father's footsteps - continued with the expansion of the company's network and scope of services and products.

Currently, the Group employs approximately 53,000 people in 850 offices distributed over more than 100 countries and has approx. 7 million sqm of warehouse space under management worldwide.

Kuehne Foundation

The public interest Kuehne Foundation: [http://www.kuehne-stiftung.org] , set up by the Kuehne family in 1976, has as its sole donor Klaus-Michael Kühne. The Foundation’s objective is to support training and further education measures, as well as foster science and research in transport and logistics. Furthermore, the Foundation supports research in medical science, as well as sponsoring humanitarian, charitable and cultural projects. Over the past years Klaus-Michael Kuehne has allocated the Foundation considerable funds enabling it to continually expand its activities in the fields of logistics and transport and to enter into close partnerships with leading universities and business schools.
