nihongo|"Tsukihime, Lunar Legend"|真月譚 月姫|Shingetsutan Tsukihime, also known simply as "Lunar Legend Tsukihime" (the English title of the manga, and distributed versions of the anime series across Southeast Asia, South Asia, Australasia, and other regions) is a 12-episode Japanese anime television series, produced by J.C.Staff, and adapted from TYPE-MOON's highly successful visual novel, "Tsukihime".

Directed by Katsushi Sakurabi, it was originally broadcast from October 9 to December 25, 2003, and has been broadcast in Japan by TBS, BS-i, and the anime television network Animax, who have also later broadcast the series across its respective networks worldwide, including its English-language networks (under the title "Lunar Legend Tsukihime", the series' only English language broadcasts) in Southeast Asia and South Asia, and its other networks in East Asia, South America and other regions. The title "Tsukihime, Lunar Legend" is only used in Geneon's North American DVD releases. The music for the series was composed by Toshiyuki Ōmori and has been released in two soundtracks.

Plot

:"For a detailed synopsis, see Tsukihime."The series follows the life of Shiki Tohno, a prodigious 17-year old high school student, who is gifted with a mysterious ability to see "death-lines", which, when cut, will destroy the object they reside within. A product of a life-threatening injury suffered in his childhood, this unique yet traumatizing ability of Shiki's is shielded by a pair of special glasses, a childhood gift from a mysterious woman, Aoko Aozaki. These glasses aid him in not seeing the death-lines and to live a relatively peaceful and normal life.

Shiki is sent away from his household, the Tohno mansion, because of the fatal injury and the ill health that followed afterwards. He spends years living with relatives of the Tohno family, the Arimas. Finally, after eight years, following the death of his father, Makihisa, Shiki returns to the Tohno mansion to live with his sister, Akiha. Akiha had been given the responsibility of being the Tohno family's new matriarch.

As the story progresses, Shiki gradually discovers his past and numerous other mysteries surrounding him.

Manga

The manga adaptation has been serialized in MediaWorks' seinen manga magazine "Dengeki Daioh" since October 2003, during the same period the anime series premiered. The plot largely follows a mix of the anime plot and the game's Arcueid route. The focus is on Arcueid and Shiki, with the other characters playing larger roles, such as Ciel and Akiha. Unlike the anime, the manga adapts the original game much further (such as the battle with Nero Chaos, longer in the game as reflected by the manga).
