- Lasaraleen
Lasaraleen is a fictional character in the "
The Chronicles of Narnia " byC.S. Lewis . She appears in only one of the books, "The Horse and His Boy ."Lasaraleen is a Tarkheena, a noblewoman of
Calormen , an empire to the south and west of Narnia. Like most Tarkheenas, she married young to a presumably older man who was arranged to marry her by her parents. Her husband is mentioned but never appears in the books.Lasaraleen is an old friend of
Aravis , one of the main characters of the book; Aravis, though also a Tarkheena, flees from her house for the Narnian country to avoid marrying a sixty-year-old man whom she doesn't love. The two friends are very different; while Aravis likes riding horses, archery and such, Lasaraleen prefers the normal Tarkheena lifestyle, including the luxury and such, and doesn't mind the things that Aravis hates. After marrying, Lasaraleen apparently moved with her husband to
Tashbaan , capital of Calormen. When Aravis flees for Narnia, she must pass through the city and winds up meeting Lasaraleen. Lasaraleen, though unable to understand why she would want to flee for the "barbarian" lands and avoid marrying her incredibly powerful fiance (Aravis' hated mate, Ahoshta, isGrand Vizier ), she agrees to help Aravis hide from her father, who is in Tashbaan searching for his daughter. She also helps Aravis escape through theTisroc 's palace, and the two overhear the Tisroc, Prince Rabadash and the Vizier plotting an invasion of both Narnia andArchenland before Aravis leaves. Aravis says in leaving that she knows Lasaraleen will have an excellent life, in the latter's view, but Aravis explains that it's "not for me."Lasaraleen enjoys gossiping, endless discussions of her wardrobe and is a "terrible giggler."
