The story begins with Gretchen and Clark visiting their grandparents Eddie and Rose (who live in a marsh) while their parents go to Atlanta. Soon Gretchen discovers Eddie and Rose taking a lot of food to the third floor. When they are playing Hide and Seek, the siblings discover their grandparents have a monster in their house. Eddie and Rose go to the city and leave their grandchildren locked in the house to protect them and give them two letters to read. Gretchen and Clark open the first one which tells them about the monster in the room on the third floor. They hear the monster and Gretchen tries use to kill the monster through a hole in the third floor and poisoning it, but she doesn't succeed. The monster traps the kids and licks Gretchen's arm. The monster falls down dead after admitting it is allergic to humans and the kids escape the house. They read the second letter outside: it warns them to not go in the swamp because the monster's siblings are out there and they are unhappy their brother was captured. Gretchen and Clark realize they are in the swamp at night.
TV Adaptation
In the TV adaptation of this book:
*The monster explodes after Clark gets his fist stuck in the monster's mouth (instead of Gretchen getting licked and the monster asking the two if they're human), and Gretchen deduces that the monster was allergic when the two escape into the swamp.
*Gretchen and Clark's dog, Charley, isn't seen in the TV version.Tagline
