:"This is an article about a particle accelerator. For uses of "spear", see
spear orspear (disambiguation) ".SPEAR (originally Stanford Positron Electron Asymmetric Ring, now simply a name) is a
collider at theStanford Linear Accelerator Center . It began running in 1972, collidingelectron s andpositron s with an energy of 3GeV . During the 1970s, experiments at the accelerator played a key role inparticle physics research, including the discovery of the SubatomicParticle|link=yes|J/Psi particle that was awarded theNobel Prize in physics 1976 and othercharmonium states and the discovery of thetau lepton , awarded theNobel Prize in physics 1995 .Today, SPEAR is used as a
synchrotron radiation source for theStanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory . The latest major upgrade of the ring in that finished in 2004 rendered it the current name SPEARIII.External links
