Soltsy ( _ru. Сольцы́) is a town in the western part of
Novgorod Oblast ,Russia , located on the left bank of theShelon River , 78 km south-west ofVeliky Novgorod . Its name owes to the nearby salt water springs. Population: 11,264 (2002 Census).History
The village was first documentally mentioned in 1390. At that time it was an important point of the trade route between Novgorod and
Pskov . In 1471 theBattle of Shelon between Muscovite forces led by Ivan III and the army of theNovgorod Republic took place near Soltsy, which marked the end of political independence of the Novgorod Republic.The settlement gradually developed, and in 1914 was granted town status.

Soltsy-2 is located north-east of the town.Transportation
The town is located along the Novgorod–
Pskov highway, and theSaint Petersburg –Vitebsk railway.
