HMS Wryneck (D21)

HMS Wryneck (D21)

HMS "Wryneck" (D21) was a W class destroyer laid down for the Royal Navy at Palmers Shipbuilding Co. at Jarrow-on-Tyne in September 1917. She was launched on 13 May 1918 and commissioned on 11 November of the same year.

At the time of the outbreak of World War II, "Wryneck" was stationed in Gibraltar as part of the British Mediterranean Fleet.

In April 1941, "Wryneck" was sent to help evacuate troops from the campaign in Greece. On 27 April, "Wryneck" and another destroyer, HMS "Diamond", were attacked by German Ju-87 bombers whilst rescuing survivors from a downed British troopship, the "Slamat". Both "Wryneck" and "Diamond" were sunk. Of almost 950 troops and sailors on both ships, only 23 were rescued.
