- HMS Wryneck (D21)
HMS "Wryneck" (D21) was a W class destroyer laid down for the
Royal Navy at Palmers Shipbuilding Co. at Jarrow-on-Tyne in September 1917. She was launched on13 May 1918 and commissioned on11 November of the same year.At the time of the outbreak of
World War II , "Wryneck" was stationed inGibraltar as part of theBritish Mediterranean Fleet .In April 1941, "Wryneck" was sent to help evacuate troops from the campaign in
Greece . On27 April , "Wryneck" and another destroyer, HMS "Diamond", were attacked by German Ju-87 bombers whilst rescuing survivors from a downed British troopship, the "Slamat". Both "Wryneck" and "Diamond" were sunk. Of almost 950 troops and sailors on both ships, only 23 were rescued.
