Stemming from discontent with other client offerings at the time, Dominic originally coded HydraIRC as an IRC client for personal use. It is loosely based on the design of
Bersirc . Due to how quickly it matured into a usable client (less than 6 months from conception), Dominic soon released it to the public. Since then, interest has grown in the client due to its quirky quit messages and grass-roots promotion (users that were asked how they heard about the client often found it though the quit messages).Development
HydraIRC is coded in
C++ and uses theWindows Template Library . Patches are accepted and approved only by Clifton.The client is released under a non-OSI approved "limited-use source" license. One can request access to the source through the website.

Criticism
*Random self-promotional quit messages are used by default when the user disconnects from a server, and can be overridden manually by using the /quit command. This is stated in the FAQ, which explains the quit messages will be non-configurable until version 1.0 has been released.
