John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudoun

John Campbell, 1st Earl of Loudoun was a Scottish politician. He was the eldest son of James Campbell of Lawers and was created first Earl of Loudon 1637. He resisted Charles I in 1641 was appointed Lord Chancellor of Scotland, an office which he held for 19 years, until he was deposed at the restoration; and was also First Commissioner of the Treasury. From 1649 to 1660 he was President of the Privy Council. He was Chancellor of the University of St Andrews from 1643 til his death in 1661.
