Scunthorpe on the formerHumberside County Council from 1989 until 1996. He stood in the 1992 election for the seat of Brigg & Cleethorpes. From 1996-7, he was leader ofNorth Lincolnshire Council. He has been an MP since the 1997 election, and is seen as an unquestioning loyalist to the Labour government who has rarely rebelled against the party whip at Westminster.
He served as
Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to Lord Williams of Mostyn from 2001 to 2002. He then became PPS toDavid Miliband at theDepartment of Education and Skills and then theCabinet Office . After the 2005 general election he was made a Government whip.On taking office Gordon Brown appointed Cawsey to be a Vice-Chair of the Labour Party with responsibility for animal welfare.
Personal life
He married Linda Mary Kirman in July 1987. They have a son (born May 1993) and two daughters (born January 1988 and April 1997), and reside in Winterton. He is a musician and has performed in local
glam rock tribute bands, and sings and plays bass guitar in the group MP4, which is composed of four MPs.In the late 1990s he had cancer which he has now overcome.
