NAS Wexford, a US naval air station, was built during World War I at a site formerly used by the Royal Naval Air Service to protect the southern entrance to the Irish Sea. A seaplane station, it was located at Ferrybank. All construction was done by American labour and was finished on 18 September 1918. Operations began that month and the station was closed on 15 February 1919. (Note: another source says that the station was put in commission on 2 May 1918. However, it is possible that this is the date on which construction started.)
A concrete slipway is all that remains.
Another WWI US naval air station in Ireland was in County Cork, NAS Whiddy Island.
